A Valiant Effort at Stage 2 of European Tour Q School

On the 7th – 10th November, Tom travelled to Panoramica Resort in Spain for the 2nd Stage of European Tour Qualifying School.

After a solid week of preparation along with having his long time friend and college teammate James Brockington on the bag, he was ready to compete and feeling confident.

Conditions remained calm for the duration of the 4 round tournament and although Panoramica boasted a yardage over 700o, there wasn’t too much trouble and therefore made scoring exceptionally low. Overall there were 17 qualifying spots.

Tom got off to a nervous start, and after over clubbing on his 3rd hole which led to a double bogey, he held on for a 1st round score of 74. The 2nd round was of stark contrast, he knew he would have to shoot a low round to rectify the previous days disappointment and that is exactly what happened. Tom started with 3 birdies and an eagle to be -5 through 4 holes and after some exceptionally steady golf, signed for a 2nd round score of 66.  The 3rd round was again very steady, but after a few frustrating near misses, Tom signed for a 70 moving him -6 for the tournament. Based on the strength of the field, Tom would have needed to have been on -10 after 3 rounds to be in a qualifying position. He knew he needed another very low round to have a chance and after a mistake on his 8th hole on the final day, this meant Tom went onto post a 73, leaving him -5 for the tournament and out of the qualifying spots.

It was a great learning experience for Tom and one he will build upon ready for next year. It has been an extremely successful rookie year that included a major win on The Alps Tour, a Jamega Winter Series title and a TP Tour Betterball Championship as well as keeping his card on The Alps Tour for the 2015 season.
