Tom recently travelled to Hardelot, France for the 1st Stage of European Tour Q School. The tournament ran from the 23rd – 26th September and was played at Golf d’Hardelot, Les Pins over 72 holes with 22 places and ties available to advance onto the 2nd Stage of qualifying.
After a very solid 1st round, Tom recorded a 69 (-2) which contained 3 birdies and just one bogey placing him at T14th. His performance in the 2nd round was almost identical recording another 69 (-2) with another 3 birdies and a lone bogey, having only 2 made over the course of 36 holes moving him up to T7th and -4 for the tournament. The 3rd round was somewhat different with strong winds and gusty intervals, Tom had to rely on his putter on more than one occasion to save par. Thankfully his putting remained his strength and managed to record a respectable 72 (+1) and finish -3 for 54 holes and dropping only 3 places T10th on the leaderboard and comfortably made the cut.
The 4th and final round was in a league of its own comparative to the previous 3 and after being +2 after 9, Tom knew he needed to dig deep. A flurry of 4 consecutive birdies on 11,12,13,14 helped ease the pressure but the intensity of Q School was still present. He proceeded to bogey 15 and 16 taking him back to level par, needing a solid finish. A great shot into the par 3, 17th led to another birdie and a bogey to finish on 18 meant that he finished with a 71 (Par) on a total of -3 finishing T10th overall.
This means Tom comfortably progresses into the 2nd Stage of European Tour Q School to be played at 1 of 4 different venues in Spain from November 7th -10th. There are now potentially just 10 rounds of golf the stand between Tom and his 2015 European Tour card. To be continued…….
