Part of the 2013 EuroPro Tour schedule, the WPT Championship played at The Oxfordshire in Thame on the 28th-29th August was Tom’s first professional event into which he gained a spot with a last minute invitation.
Over the course of the two days, Tom played solid golf from tee to green making very few mistakes. Unfortunately, his putting wasn’t up to his usual high standards and he failed to capitalise on a number of short birdie putts. He did however hole a 6 iron from 181 yards for eagle on the first day down the 10th, a testament to how well he was hitting his irons. A late charge with a few birdies on the back 9 in the 2nd round as well as some horse-shoe putts saw Tom shoot scores of 73 and 75 which was 3 shots too many to continue on to the final round.
After some reflection, it was clear to Tom that it was simply a few putts over the course of the 2 days that held him back from posting two under-par rounds. It was an extremely positive start and highlights just how much golf is a game of tiny margins! It was great from an educative standpoint for Tom who is ready to take on the challenges of European Tour Q School which starts in October.
Back in action again on October 1st, Tom starts his journey through the 1st Stage of Qualifying School at Frilford Heath Golf Club on the Red Course.
Special thanks from Tom go to Gordon Jones who gave up two days to caddy for him, and to Richard Tarr and Mike Hill who came out to show their support. “It’s greatly appreciated!”
