After spending a stint in Spain which began on the 3rd of December for Alps Tour Qualifying School, Tom comfortably qualified through the 1st stage by finishing T4th on a total of -3 for 36 holes on the America course at the La Cala resort in southern Spain.
Final Stage of Alps Tour Qualifying School was scheduled between the 16th-18th December where Tom had to play one round on the Asia and one round on the America before a cut was made allowing the top 65 players from 150 entrants to progress on to the final round in an attempt to finish inside the top 35 so as to gain a full playing category for the 2014 season on the Alps Tour.
Tom got off to a slow start on the first round after making a triple bogey on his 4th hole of the Asia course. Tom called upon his recent experience at European Tour school and stayed calm, playing very steady golf to sign for a respectable 74 (+2) for Day 1. The 2nd round was played around Tom’s course of preference, the America, and thanks to an early flurry of birdies, Tom played great golf to sign for a second round of 69 (-3) which was comfortably 4 shots inside the cut line to progress on to the final round. It was within the 3rd and final round that Tom showed his experience and composure making 5 birdies through the first 11 holes with no mistakes to be -5. After an unfortunate bounce that led to a double bogey on 15, Tom went on to sign for a 70 (-2) which placed him T20th.
Tom has succeeded in gaining his full playing rights on the Alps Tour for 2014 and has given himself the opportunity to satellite on to the Challenge Tour at the end of the year should he play well enough to finish inside the top 5 on the Order of Merit. It was an extremely successful performance and Tom will now continue to represent Castle Royle on an international stage amongst the professional ranks throughout 2014.
