Tom left for Spain on the 3rd December where he travelled to the southern Spanish resort of La Cala, situated high up in the hills near Marbella, Spain. He was lucky enough to have the support of both Malcolm and Kathy Bruce allowing him to stay cost free in their house situated on the resort. It allowed him to get a solid week of practice learning both the Asia and America courses on which the Alps Tour School Qualifying School is being played this year.
After a lot of yardage conversions (as the measurements are in meters in continental Europe) and hours of practice, Tom started the 1st Stage of Q School on his course of preference, the America. The 1st stage consisted of 36 holes with 34 of 72 players making it through to Final Stage. This was the same for the Asia course with a total of 68 players making it along with another 82 already exempt. Tom had to qualify as this was his first attempt at playing on the Alps Tour.
Day 1 started on the 12th December and Tom got off to a very good start being -4 after 9, leading the way. After some extremely steady play, an unfortunate double bogey on the 18th hole led to a -2 (70) first day score placing him at T7th. Day 2 was slightly contrasting with Tom making 3 quick bogeys and being +3 through 5 holes. However after a spree of 4 birdies in 5 holes through the middle part of his 2nd round, it meant that Tom went on and carded a -1 (71) moving him up 3 places finishing T4th for 1st Stage on a total of -3 overall.
Tom is looking forward to the challenges ahead in Final Stage which is set to start on Monday 16th December. The target is to finish inside the top 30 gaining the best category moving forward for next year’s Alps Tour Schedule.
